Anyone watching this? I was never really a fan though did watch it for many years from the start until Richard Whiteley put me off when he started his puns and corny jokes. My mum has always loved it and wanted it to come back after Richard died earlier this year. I have been watching it with Des Lynam and I'm enjoying it again. He seems to be settling in now after a nervous start.

People on Ceefax have been saying Des is boring. He's really getting into it now and cracking jokes. Not his fault his delivery is the same no matter what he's presenting.

Beat me too it! Thats why I was asking on the lTS board about the section for gameshows!
I missed this when Richard died, and too be honest I could not think of a worser replacement for Richard in Des. I emailed the countdown office and the producer actually emailed me back and asked me why I thought that of Des. I told him that even though I did not know him well enough, I did not think he was a suitable replacement. Anyway, the producer asked me to email him back after des' first week to let him know what I thought then, but at present I fell ill, so could not, I am in the process of doing that now. I will let you know of his reply if you like?
I told him who I thought would be suitable - Philip Franks as he always used to have his own little puzzle at the ready for the viewers at the break time. I thought he would be fantastic.
Anyway Des seems to be settling in now, though there are still bits that is not there anymore, but like my other half says, he has got to make it his own show now. I guess there was only one Richard.
I saw the tribute to him the other day and it reminded me of how Countdown used to be, and what is missing now, apart from Richard and just as I was getting used to Des, I felt it wasn't the same anymore, though I will continue to watch it.
That was the thing about the jokes though wasn't it? 'Only jokes that Richard could tell', no matter how bad they were, you laughed as that was the way he made them sound.

I saw some of this and quite liked Des Lynam but he was overshadowed by Carol Vorderman. I think Des O'Connor is a bad choice. He's good as a chat show host but they'll be replacing him in a few years. The should have gone for someone younger.

I never liked him as such, I hated him on Des and Mel, and I always thought he laughed just for the sake of it, but I think he has settled in quite well in the Countdown chair and is much better than Des Lynam, and although he will never replace Richard, he seems to have settled in so much as though he has been there for years.

I catch it now and again as my mum still watches. She'd completely forgotten Des Lynam did it at all and thought Richard wasn't dead! I'm sure she's going senile. I tend to agree with you, Sharon. From the bits I've seen he does seem to be very at ease with everything and settled in. I wonder what Madge thinks now?
