They don't make programmes like this any more! Despite several of the cast being on the podgy side and a few actually looking like they were starving, it's brilliant. Stood the test of time. My favourite characters were Rose and Blanche but I liked so many. Hated Maggie and Alice though in series 3/Reunion. Love Van Meyer. She's so selfish and lazy you can't help it really. LOL! Also liked Shinya and Yamauchi. They were nice for the enemy. I was really miffed when Shinya died.

Loved Tenko too...and the reunion shows. Joss, Blanche, Rose, Beatrice, Sister Auricka and Sally were my faves. What was the name of the woman who was the spokeperson for the rest of the camp? She was friends with Bea and had her young son with her. After the war she was reuninted with her husband and they divorced not long after. She was the one who went to see Yamuchi in the prison cell. Whatever her name was, I liked her too.

Marion Jefferson. Maybe she should have got it on with Major Yamauchi! LOL! But her son Ben was in England safe when war broke out and she was being evacuated when the Japanese hit Singapore and the boat was hit. I liked Sister Ulrica too. I was pleased when she returned in Reunion. I liked Christina but in Reunion it was obvious really she was a rebel and behind that raid as Van Meyer's house for the guns. She had been corrupted by Yamauchi. I would like to know what happened to her later though. They should have another reunion!

Marion Jefferson!!! thanks Pats once again. Its been years since I have watched Tenko so some stuff is still pretty sketchy. Yet there are are other things in Tenko that seem ingrained in my memory. Strange that innit. I do remember there was one woman who had her son with her in the 1st series of Tenko...Yamucchi ordered the young lad to go and stay in the mens camps, not sure if Marion persuaded Yamuchi to change his mind. That`s all I remember about it.
From what I can remember (and again my memory is pretty sketchy), when Yamuchi was in the prison cell waiting to be executed, the camera panned to a scene of Christine in a jail cell too. Whether she was waiting to be executed too, I`m not sure. But that was the impression I got.

No, the little boy still went. Marion wasn't happy. For years I always remembered Rose being shot and disabled afterwards, before Bea smothered her. It was so powerful it's the only thing I DID remember until UK Gold started showing it in their first week back in 1992.
Yamauchi in prison was the end of series 3. Christina was Reunion.
Here's a little info I discovered recently despite watching it numerous times between UK Gold and the last DVDs last year. The final ep of series 3 was partly filmed in Southampton Docks! The SS Ranchi, which they're meant to be on, is actually black with 1 tall funnel. The ship at the dock was the Canberra and white! They were very careful not to show too much though, just near the back of it. But I haven't found out yet what that insert ship is which they're meant to be sailing on, with 2 funnels, but is actually arriving (with either a teeny bit of the Canberra or previous Oriana showing in the top left corner). Being a sad ship lover does have its benefits. LOL!

I love Tenko and was lucky enough to get series 1 on DVD for my birthday this year. Great stuff and so much I had forgotten. Van Meyer and Ulrica were excellent but there were too many good characters to have favourites really.

Van Meyer was such a lazy, selfish snob it was always great when she was taken down several pegs, especially when she was made to work.

I'm sure someone will if you give them enough hints, Warren. Maybe you could hint to someone else for series 3 as well. Patsy

From BBC Online:
Drama Connections Tue 27 Sep, 10:35 pm - 11:05 pm 30mins
Tenko
Meera Syal narrates the behind the scenes story of Tenko, the BBC's drama about women in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II.
If the characters of Tenko triumphed against the odds, so did the women who brought it to our screens. At a time when TV drama was macho and male-dominated - both on screen and behind the camera - few people gave a story about a group of women in captivity any real chance of success. But millions of viewers became embroiled in the lives of the characters in the camp and a legacy of strong, independent women in television drama is testament to Tenko's importance.
Drama Connections reveals the real-life roots of the Tenko story; how the BBC allowed a lesbian storyline as long as the term lesbian was never used; that leafy Dorset had to double for steamy Sumatra; how the producer requesting that the cast not shave their armpits showed how far behind the times men in TV were; and just what an extraordinary bond was formed between the women who worked together to make Tenko as authentic a portrayal of history as they could manage.
Interviewees include series creator Lavinia Warner, Stephanie Beacham, Stephanie Cole, Louise Jameson, Ann Bell, Veronica Roberts, Burt Kwouk, writer Jill Hyem, director Pennant Roberts and producer Ken Riddington.

After it was discovered that Christina was the leader of the local Communist cell, she was left languishing in jail I think..

It's a pity they never did another reunion. Though it would have to be better than the last one. Christina could have escaped and got her revenge.

Thanks, Sooty. This is a bit of a tricky question since I've asked people who know their stuff and not got an answer. But does anyone know the name of the 2nd ship in the last ep? The first at the dock in Singapore (Southampton really) was Canberra doubling for SS Ranchi (which was actually black with 1 black funnel). But the insert of something else they're meant to be on returning to the UK (which was filmed arriving, not sailing and you can see the Canberra a bit in the top left of the picture) is a mystery. I haven't got DVD on my computer so can't do a screen capture. Patsy

Did anyone watch the BBC1 programme last night about the making of Tenko. It was really good, it had various actresses commenting on it, including Staphanie's Beacham and Cole. I didn't realise it was filmed in Dorset. !
